Types of humor, with examples

The main types of humor are observational, dry, deadpan, sarcastic, self-deprecating, dark, absurd, wordplay, physical and satire. They differ in what the joke aims at and how it is delivered: dry and deadpan hide the joke in a flat voice, absurd breaks the rules of the world, observational points at something everyone has noticed. Most comedians mix two or three.

Two ways to sort humor

Comedians sort humor by technique: what the joke does and how it is said. Psychologists sort it by what the humor is for. The best-known research version, the Humor Styles Questionnaire by Rod Martin and colleagues, splits it into four styles: affiliative (amusing other people), self-enhancing (finding the funny side of your own bad day), aggressive (put-downs and sarcasm aimed at others) and self-defeating (running yourself down for approval). This page uses the comedian's sort, because that is the one you can write with.

Observational humor

Observational humor points at something everyone has noticed but nobody has said out loud. The laugh is recognition. It works when the detail is exact: not airports in general, but the moment the gate agent says the plane is here and you can all see it is not. Example: "The self-checkout said unexpected item in the bagging area, which is how I'd describe my whole twenties." Start from a real moment and name the precise thing.

Dry humor and deadpan

Dry humor says something funny as if it were not a joke. Deadpan is the delivery that goes with it: a flat face, no smile, no signal. The audience does the work of noticing, which is why it lands harder when it lands. Example, said with no expression: "I've started a new fitness routine. I park further from the door and complain about it the whole way." The rule is never to wink. The moment you show you know it is funny, it stops being dry.

Sarcasm

Sarcasm says the opposite of what you mean, and the tone gives it away. It is the fastest type of humor and the easiest to overuse, because on its own it is a reaction rather than a joke. It works best with a concrete image attached. Weak: "Oh great, another meeting." Stronger: "Love a meeting that could have been an email. This one could have been a Post-it note on a fridge nobody opens." The second half is where the laugh is.

Self-deprecating humor

Self-deprecating humor makes you the target. It lowers the stakes, gets the audience on your side fast, and is the backbone of most storytime videos. Keep it about your choices and situations rather than things you cannot change, and keep it specific: "I meal-prepped for the week. By Wednesday the containers were full of regret and one sad chickpea." A whole set of it starts to read as fishing for reassurance, so mix it with other types.

Dark humor

Dark humor finds the joke in subjects people usually treat seriously: death, disaster, bad luck at scale. It works through relief, saying the thing everyone is tiptoeing around. It depends heavily on the room and on aiming at the situation rather than at the people hurt by it. A mild example: "My plant died while I was on vacation. The neighbor I paid to water it sent flowers." When in doubt, punch at the absurdity of the situation, never at a victim.

Absurd and surreal humor

Absurd humor breaks the logic of the world and then treats the broken version as normal. The commitment is the joke. Example: "My smoke alarm only goes off when I'm being dramatic. It went off during my apology." The trick is internal consistency: once the rule is set, follow it all the way. Absurd bits get funnier the more calmly you treat the impossible part, which is why absurd and deadpan pair so well.

Wordplay, physical comedy and satire

Wordplay gets its laugh from language itself: puns, double meanings, a phrase taken literally. Physical comedy uses the body: a fall, a face, a prop that refuses to cooperate, and it travels across languages better than any other type. Satire exaggerates a real institution or trend to show what is ridiculous about it, like an office that schedules a meeting to discuss having fewer meetings. Satire needs a point; without one it is just exaggeration.

Find your type

Most comedians are known for one register and borrow from two others. To find yours, write the same small situation five ways: observational, dry, sarcastic, self-deprecating and absurd. Read them out loud. The one you can say without forcing it is your home base. Shutap, the AI joke generator for creators, can give you a draft of the same story in different voices, such as deadpan, dry, storyteller or roast. Treat them as options to react to: keep the one that sounds like you, then rewrite it in your own words.

Questions people ask

What are the main types of humor?

The ones comedians use most are observational, dry, deadpan, sarcastic, self-deprecating, dark, absurd, wordplay, physical comedy and satire. Psychology research groups humor into four styles instead: affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive and self-defeating.

What is the difference between dry humor and deadpan?

Dry humor is the content: a joke said as if it were a plain statement. Deadpan is the delivery: no smile, no change in tone. Dry humor is almost always delivered deadpan, but deadpan delivery can carry any type of joke.

What is dark humor?

Dark humor makes jokes about subjects usually treated as serious or taboo, such as death or disaster. It works through relief, by saying what everyone is avoiding, and lands best when it aims at the situation rather than at the people affected.

Is sarcasm a type of humor?

Yes. Sarcasm says the opposite of what you mean, with tone as the signal. On its own it is more of a reaction than a joke, so it works best when you attach a specific, visual image to it.

What type of humor works best on TikTok?

Self-deprecating and observational humor are the backbone of storytime and POV videos, because viewers recognize the situation in the first seconds. Deadpan works well to camera, since a flat face reads clearly on a phone screen.
